Alexei Vernitski
Alexei Vernitski is a poet writing mainly in Russian; he grew up in Ekaterinburg (Russia) and now lives in Colchester. He was published in the literary magazines 'Arion', 'Novyi Mir' 'Vavilon', 'Vozdukh' and others. Vernitski is the founder of the first online Russian poetry magazine 'Vernitskii Literature' (http://vernitski.narod.ru/).
He is active in developing new poetic forms, most notably the 'tanketki', haiku-inspired poems of 6 syllables divided into 2 lines. Since 2003 tanketki have become a flourishing poetic project with a dedicated online magazine (http://26.netslova.ru/).
Tanketki by Vernitski and others have been published in a number of literary magazines and recently as a book. Among other forms he invented are pi poems, in which each line both contains the number of syllables expressed by the corresponding digit in the number pi and describes the number of syllables in itself. Vernitski's poetry in Russian is available online (http://vesver.narod.ru/).
In English, his poems were published in the magazine 'Modern Poetry in Translation' (no 17, 2001). Vernitski is a lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Essex and participates in poetry-related events at the University and in Colchester.
