Digital video and photography are new for me — in keeping with Rich Murphy's call for experimental work but also in response to the challenges of working without a studio for the last couple of years. I always had a big studio in Boston, and made drawings, sculptures, and installations (like Learning to Speak). While I miss that and hope to have it again, the gain is that my situation in Brooklyn has nudged me toward new materials and processes, and I have to find ways to get my work done using them. I made these images at home with a friend's words in mind, spoken to me some months ago when she visited and I was bemoaning my studio-less-ness: It's all right here, Liz.

My work is about the ordinary stuff of life and its innate, waiting, extra-ordinariness. The most familiar things — the stove, say — can be compelling if we slow down, look, and have the actual experience. The simple act of taking note, if brought to all our day-to-day dealings, would perhaps call enough attention to the carelessness we bestow on each other and the world to have us reconsider. While developing a deep appreciation for Cling Wrap may not seem like a sufficiently big gesture to change the world, seeing the ordinary anew seems to me the only place to start.
